Exmoor facts and figures: Exmoor, named after the River Exe, which runs through it,  is an area of unique and varied scenery spanning the largely rural counties of West Somerset and North Devon in the west of England. Exmoor is primarily an upland area with a fairly scattered population living mainly in villages and hamlets, such as Dunster and Winsford. The largest settlements within Exmoor itself are Porlock, Dulverton, Lynton and Lynmouth. The highest point on Exmoor is Dunkery Beacon, at 519 metres, which also makes it the highest point in the county of Somerset. Exmoor has just over 34 miles of coastline, including the highest cliffs in England, at Culbone Hill. The South West Coast Path, at 630 miles long, is the longest National Trail in England and Wales, starting as it does at Minehead and extending along all of Exmoor's coast. Exmoor has been the setting for several novels including the 19th century classic Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor by R. D. Blackmore. Exmoor National Park itself covers an area of roughly 267 sq miles. Signs of a more ancient Exmoor can be seen in the Caractacus Stone, Tarr Steps and Withypool Hill Stone Circle.
